Typically, if we haven\u2019t flipped them already with our somewhat standard interview portion, it\u2019s when the artist really comes alive and often provides some deeper insight into what they\u2019re buzzing about off the stage as we ask them to tell us what they\u2019ve been into recently that isn\u2019t their current project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, we\u2019ve had some doozies, from a stone-faced Billy Duffy from The Cult telling us to <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2016\/04\/04\/617-cults-billy-duffy-talks-guns-n-roses-reunion-benefits-drinking-water-whats-wrong-manchester-citys-football-club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drink more water<\/a>, to Ash\u2019s Tim Wheeler <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2016\/10\/03\/617-ash-frontman-tim-wheeler-star-wars-1977\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advocating for Muay-Thai<\/a> while casually revealing he\u2019d spent time in Bangkok training intensely in the full-contact martial art. Sometimes, the nut is harder to crack as our subjects can\u2019t get out of self-promotion mode, whether it&#8217;s pimping the band that\u2019s opening the current tour, or pushing some vanity endeavor on the side \u2013 like Dave Mustaine and <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2016\/03\/21\/617-dave-mustaine-of-megadeth-talks-scott-weiland-getting-baited-into-controversy-and-why-politicians-should-work-for-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">his wine business<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The past 12 months were no different, as a wide range of conversations left us running to make purchases online, stream a film or artist, and getting introspective during a period when everyone could do with some looking inward. Here are 10 of our favorites recs, in order of when we chatted with our interviewees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Marty Friedman <\/strong>on Cap\u2019n Crunch Arctic Crunch<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ex-Megadeth guitarist <strong>Marty Friedman<\/strong> has been living in Japan for more than two decades now, carving out a career as a bona fide multi-genre, multimedia star. But while the move may have expanded his cultural awareness more than most of us could ever fathom, it hasn\u2019t taken away his penchant for all things junk food \u2013 especially sugary breakfast cereals. When he was back on these shores for a run of solo dates last winter, he was excited to indulge in the latest limited edition offering from General Mills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCap\u2019n Crunch\u2019s Arctic Crunch cereal is awesome!\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2025\/02\/04\/617-qa-marty-friedman-on-dreaming-japanese-alleged-metal-feuds-and-capn-crunch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he enthused.<\/a> \u201cI just picked it up on the tour here in the U.S. I wish they had it in Japan, but sadly, cereal in general is not really a thing over there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Megadeth - Hangar 18\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rUGIocJK9Tc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Josh Carter of Phantogram <\/strong>on Sacred Spirits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2025\/02\/10\/617-qa-phantogram-on-van-halen-trash-martinis-and-their-favorite-duos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we sat down with the electronic rock duo <strong>Phantogram<\/strong><\/a>, Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, it was a lively conversation with two people who obviously have a lot of mutual respect and reverence for one another. The latter was particularly high on his friend\u2019s band, <a href=\"https:\/\/brokencircles.bandcamp.com\/album\/some-stay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sacred Spirits<\/a>, though his recommendation was tinged with a bit of frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think he should tour and play,\u201d Carter said. \u201cHe made an album called <em>Some Stay,<\/em> and it\u2019s just Incredible. I love it. From front to back. He made it, like, 10 years ago, and I\u2019m like, \u2018What the fuck? How could somebody this talented and who writes such good, cool songs not be touring it or be bigger or big at all?\u2019 So, go listen to Sacred Spirits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019d be remiss not to mention his bandmate\u2019s recommendation, which was ice baths. Unfortunately, that had already been advocated for by <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2024\/08\/22\/617-qa-gavin-rossdale-talks-ice-baths-keanu-reeves-and-bush-loaded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gavin Rossdale in a 617 Q&amp;A<\/a> a scant few months prior. Informed that the Bush frontman had also lauded the circulatory benefits of a cold plunge, Barthel said, straight-faced, \u201cWe have so much in common, we should probably get married.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Coma\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xepSwqhzzRo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Earl Slick <\/strong>on &#8216;being open to influences&#8217;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Guitarist <strong>Earl Slick<\/strong> has performed with some of the biggest heavyweights in music, from David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Robert Smith and John Lennon. And, <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2025\/04\/14\/617-qa-earl-slick-on-bowie-lennon-and-teaching-music-to-a-new-generation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as he told us ahead of his appearance<\/a> at Berklee as a featured performer at &#8220;Music and Meaning in the Works of David Bowie,&#8221; he might not have had those opportunities were he closed off to outside elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am affected by art and fashion for sure,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I also think that if you\u2019re going to be, say, in a band or you\u2019re going to be somebody that plays live, it\u2019s something that you kind of need to pay attention to. And I do draw from things. I do draw from art, and I even draw from out-of-the-box stuff. So yeah, it\u2019s all, to me, if you talk \u2018out of the box,\u2019 I think that music and fashion and all of that are so intertwined, especially for a live band. And one thing inspires the other. Even what I wear in any particular situation it happens to just be where my head is at the time. So, I just do whatever that is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"David Bowie | Golden Years | Glastonbury Festival | U.K. | HD | 25 June 2000\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pT3bcTl2wT8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eloise Wong of The Linda Lindas <\/strong>on drinking hot water<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One would think trying to keep four members of <strong>The Linda Lindas<\/strong> on track <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2025\/04\/22\/617-qa-the-linda-lindas-on-life-between-the-library-and-stadiums\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">during an interview<\/a> would be akin to herding cats. It was quite the opposite, though, when the punk quartet \u2013 three of them still in grade school \u2013 proved to be more mature than some acts twice their age. Each had their own individual recommendations, but it was bassist\/singer Eloise Wong who stuck out with a call back to the aforementioned Billy Duffy\u2019s endorsement of drinking water, but with a twist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really like to drink hot water,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s one thing I would recommend. Or warm water, I guess. But I like it pretty hot. It\u2019s like, nice. I mean, I don\u2019t really drink it to help with singing\u2026I don\u2019t know, but I really like to drink hot water. I think it\u2019s \u2018cause I grew up drinking hot water with my grandparents. But yeah, I would recommend. And, also, it feels really cool when you\u2019re at a restaurant, and then they ask you, \u2018Oh, what drink do you want?\u2019 And you go, \u2018Oh, can I have hot water?\u2019 And it feels like a treat. And you don\u2019t even have to pay for a drink because it\u2019s just hot water, you know what I mean? You could get a lemonade, or you could get hot water for nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given some of the cold snaps New England has already experienced, with winter still a couple of weeks away, we&#8217;re finding Wong might be onto something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"The Linda Lindas - &quot;All In My Head&quot;\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qy7XQPOQOvM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jamie Hince of The Kills <\/strong>on &#8216;You Got Time and I Got Money&#8217; by Smerz<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When guitarist Jamie Hince declared, \u201cI think romance is back\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2025\/06\/10\/617-qa-the-kills-talk-favorite-games-past-injuries-and-not-having-fun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at the outset of his recommendation<\/a>, his bandmate in <strong>The Kills<\/strong>, Alison Mosshart, laughed as if someone unexpectedly poked her in the side. Unfazed, he proceeded to tell us about a song that became a favorite jam of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really liking this Danish pop act called Smerz, and it\u2019s a song called &#8216;You Got Time and I Got Money,'&#8221; Hince said. &#8220;I really like it. It\u2019s not the sort of thing that\u2019s going to bash you over the head and go like, &#8216;Oh my God, what is this?&#8217; But it\u2019s just sort of beautifully bloomed inside me. This kind of &#8216;Soft DIY Romance&#8217; is what I\u2019m calling it. It starts off kind of a lo-fi vocal, almost like something that would be on a Bikini Kill record, the vocal, and then everything around it just kind of grows and grows and strings come in, and it\u2019s just the more kind of beautiful and hi-fi the music is, it kind of changes the way you listen to the vocal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Smerz - You got time and I got money\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LzEzE3cpuvg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Richard Blade <\/strong>on <em>Adolescence<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Legendary Los Angeles-based DJ <strong>Richard Blade<\/strong> is directly responsible for breaking so many UK bands in the States, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, and The Police, among them. But when we asked him for a recommendation, <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2025\/07\/30\/617-qa-richard-blade-on-depeche-mode-brazilian-jazz-and-why-the-80s-still-resonate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he veered into another medium<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA four-part series that blew my socks off, and I\u2019m so pleased it got, I think, 11 Emmy nominations, is <em>Adolescence<\/em> on Netflix,\u201d Blade said. The most genre-breaking show I have ever seen because it\u2019s four episodes and each one is shot in one take, so the camera starts rolling and that\u2019s it for an hour. There\u2019s no edits in it. And I hadn\u2019t read anything about it apart from, \u2018It\u2019s good.\u2019 After I finished watching it, I did a deep dive into it, and they did three weeks of rehearsal for each episode. So, if you like that scene in Goodfellas with Martin Scorsese where they walk through the kitchens and then out into the showroom without an edit, that\u2019s what it\u2019s like for an entire hour. There\u2019s very little editing needed, but just the same, the way that show is written and structured makes me just go, \u2018Oh my God, that is fantastic.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Adolescence | Official Trailer | Netflix\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wk5OxqtpBR4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ian Astbury of The Cult <\/strong>on Daughter Minotaur<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Normally, when someone pushes a significant other\u2019s venture, it stinks of nepotism. That was hardly the case, however, when Ian Astbury told us to dig into Daughter Minotaur, the musical project of his wife, multimedia artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aimeenash.com\/welcome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aim\u00e9e Nash<\/a>. In fact, <strong>The Cult<\/strong> frontman was <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2025\/10\/10\/617-qa-ian-astbury-on-goth-romanticism-enlightenment-and-a-death-cult-revival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">late to our interview<\/a> because he had become so enraptured with the livestream of her performance during the showcase for designer Ann Demeulemeester at Paris Fashion Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[It gives] you a taste of the dark, futurist, orientalist, romantic, femme, the wave that\u2019s coming,\u201d Astbury said. \u201cThat\u2019s Daughter Minotaur. That\u2019s Aim\u00e9e. And that\u2019s not because she\u2019s my wife. That\u2019s because she slays. She slayed in front of her peers. It was her, and that was magnificent. All day long.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"ANN DEMEULEMEESTER SPRING \/ SUMMER 2026\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZSOGupQkv4k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Art Alexakis <\/strong>on swimming<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When <strong>Everclear<\/strong> frontman Art Alexakis <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2019\/03\/27\/art-alexakis-of-everclear-reveals-multiple-sclerosis-diagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced his multiple sclerosis diagnosis<\/a> back in 2019, the last thing anyone might expect was for him to be banging out 100-date tours six years later. But there he is, doing the 30<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary run for <em>Sparkle and Fade<\/em>, currently in Australia and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everclearmusic.com\/tour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">continuing in the States<\/a> well into 2026. How does he do it? One of the reasons, <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2025\/10\/20\/617-qa-art-alexakis-of-everclear-has-lived-to-tell-his-tales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as he told us in his 617 Q&amp;A<\/a>, is swimming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe reason I swim is because I used to run, but I can\u2019t run anymore because I\u2019ll fall down,\u201d Alexakis said. \u201cI have what\u2019s called drop foot. I have three lesions on my brain. I have two on my spine, and the ones on my brain are on the left side. So that affects my right side. And so, I have to be very careful when I walk or when I can\u2019t run. I used to love to run, but I always enjoyed swimming. And the thing about swimming is with MS, you\u2019re not supposed to get overheated. Heat is bad. Cold isn\u2019t great, but heat is really bad. So, I can swim and not get [overheated] and really get a lot of really hard cardio. Plus, swimming is just great exercise for everybody. It\u2019s no impact. Low impact. I do exercises like physical therapy exercises they give me in the pool for water resistance and stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Everclear - Santa Monica (Official Music Video)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MW6E_TNgCsY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Craig Wedren <\/strong>on <em>Eddington<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Post-hardcore fans were pretty amped about <strong>Shudder to Think<\/strong> being on tour for the first time in 17 years, but <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2025\/10\/22\/617-qa-craig-wedren-on-the-rise-and-resurgence-of-shudder-to-think-and-all-that-time-in-between\/\">as frontman Craig Wedren told us<\/a>, one of the things he was most thrilled about in recent memory was the latest Ari Aster film, <em>Eddington<\/em>, starring Pedro Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought it was the most exciting, refreshing, first movie made by a young artist that was about our sociopolitical moment without being didactic or feeling like I was being preached to,&#8221; Wedren said. &#8220;I felt like, \u2018Okay, finally, we\u2019re in a new era where everybody doesn\u2019t feel like they have to be an activist on one side or the other with their political messaging.\u2019 You can just express the absurdity of our times and of our humanity, which is always equally absurd, but is in a current particularly ridiculous shape and form, no matter what your beliefs or allegiance is. And, no, it didn\u2019t involve Vegemite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was very excited about making a very successful pasta aglio e olio last night,&#8221; Hay said. &#8220;It was delightful and delicious. And one of my friends said, \u2018Oh, this is like Michelin standard.\u2019 So that was pretty cool&#8230; It\u2019s just a nice pasta dish, is what it is. So, I would recommend learning how to make pasta aglio e olio. It\u2019s really good when you come home from somewhere, and you haven\u2019t really had dinner. And it takes about 30 minutes to make a good one.
